Chapter 7

Ellie finished scrubbing her face before adding fresh water to the basin and rinsing away the soap. It was a cold journey from town to Caleb’s farm and Caleb hadn’t spoken a single word the entire trip.

When they finally arrived, he had carried her into the house before bringing in the bag she had packed and the supplies he bought. He had given her a terse command to stay in the house before taking the horses to the barn.

She removed the horrible clothing that Millie had dressed her in and pulled out a simple shirt and skirt. She hadn’t packed very much – she was worried that Caleb would do something to her father if she lingered too long – and she hesitated before repacking her bag. Her fingers traced the picture of her mother she had stuffed into the bag. She stared fixedly at it before closing the bag and setting it on the floor of the spare bedroom. The dress, corset and petticoats that Millie had given her were crumpled on the floor. For a moment, she was tempted to throw them into the fire but instead she picked them up and draped them across the sofa. She was thankful that Caleb had given her a place to stay for the night but by tomorrow she would be back at the saloon. She had no place else to go and she was deeply ashamed at having to admit that to Caleb. She felt incredibly stupid that she had been so blind to her father’s true nature. Once Caleb found out that her father refused to even allow her back into the house, she would be even more ashamed.

She sighed and sat down at the table before dropping her head into her hands. What did it matter what Caleb thought of her? They had used each other for their own gain and that was it. She shouldn’t have allowed him to take her away but the thought of those men in the saloon touching her had frightened her badly. She wiped at the tears that were sliding down her cheeks. It didn’t matter how frightened she was. She needed to accept that she had no choice. Tomorrow she would walk back into town and ask Millie to hire her again. In a year or so, she would hopefully have enough money to return to the east. Her mother’s sister would take her in, she was certain of it.

The door opened and Caleb and Scout entered in a rush of cold air that took her breath away. Scout barked happily and bounded across the room to lick at her hands. She petted him gently as Caleb removed his jacket and boots and sat down across from her.

“Ellie?” He said gently. “Are you okay?”

She nodded. A curious numbness had settled over her and she stared woodenly at him before struggling to her feet.

“I’ll make you dinner.”

“No,” he said. “I don’t need dinner. Sit down and rest and I’ll make you something to eat.
